Book Review on Hex Hall

Updated: Apr 6, 2018

I just read the book Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins. It is about a sixteen year old girl named Sophie Mercer who at 12 realizes that she is a witch. She can cast spells but they never go right. At her prom she casts a love spell for a girl who didn't have a date and it worked but not in the right way. The boy that the girl wanted to go to prom with was too obsessive and the girl started screaming. That was not the first time a spell of Sophie's went wrong so a group of witches, warlocks, and shape shifters called The Council sent Sophie to a school called Hex Hall. Hex Hall is a school for witches, warlocks, shape shifters, faeries and even a vampire. The kids are sent there to help them learn magic, control magic, and learn defense against spells. Sophie is rooming with a vampire, Jenna, which Sophie's mom is scared of. Everyone blames Jenna of the death of her old roommate Holly but Sophie does not believe everyone. In defense class Sophie failed to defend herself from a spell that was put on her then talked back to the teacher. Sophie was put on cellar duty where she had to organize files because of her talking back. A boy named Archer Cross tries to stand up for her saying that it was her first time and didn't know what to do but the teacher just put him on cellar duty too. After two more attacks on students which what happened was the same as Holly even more people blamed Jenna. Sophie tried to research about what could have put those attacks on the students so Jenna did not be blamed. Sophie thought the person putting those attacks on the students was a group called The Eye. The Eye was a non magical group who wanted to destroy all magical creatures. Sophie brought her idea to the head of the school Mrs. Casnoff but she said that there was no way it could be The Eye because there were to many protection spells cast around the school for no one to get in. Time goes on and Sophie starts falling in love with Archer and realizes many secrets about her family, friends, and school. I rate this book a 5 out of 5 stars and recommend this book to tweens who love fantasy with more of a tween twist on it.

Hex Hall is one of three books in the Prodigium series.
